Healthy Skin, Healthy Body at Rejuve Medspa

By Amy George

The philosophy of a business often reflects the experiences and interests of its founder. Rejuve Medspa has several core values, one of which is to “treat each person as unique individuals, celebrating their unique qualities rather than trying to standardize beauty.” After working 20 years in emergency medicine, owner Dr. Giao Kaplan made the shift to aesthetic medicine so she could do just that.

As a board-certified emergency physician, Dr. Kaplan managed acute medical issues. She found herself wanting to focus on prevention and wellness with a schedule that would allow her “to spend ample time with patients and to develop continuity of care and personal connections.” An added bonus would be the opportunity to combine her science background with her artistic talents and creativity.

Dr. Kaplan retired from emergency medicine and started working exclusively as an aesthetic physician. Less than a year later, she opened Rejuve Medspa in Newcastle Commons in February 2021. The medical spa offers a wide range of treatments and services, including anti-aging therapies, regenerative medical treatments, and body contouring. The team offers everything from scar and acne revision and hair restoration to cellulite removal and laser skin resurfacing.

Patient experience is at the top of Rejuve’s core values. “Every patient needs to feel special,” said Dr. Kaplan. “We provide a relaxing, comfortable environment in a spa-like setting.” Patients receive customized treatment options with the aim of achieving natural-looking results in the most efficient way. “We educate and engage patients so they can choose the best treatment options in order to achieve their aesthetic goals.”

As Medical Director, Dr. Kaplan prioritizes safety. “We place a strong emphasis on continuing medical education,” Dr. Kaplan shared. The staff stay current on technologies and treatments, thoroughly research their equipment and procedures, and choose products and devices that are “clinically proven to be efficacious based on clinical trials and FDA clearances.”

In addition to the team’s clinical expertise is the safety of the building itself. “Rejuve Medspa was designed and built during the height of the COVID pandemic with safety in mind,” said Dr. Kapan. Rejuve has a special ventilation system specifically designed to filter out bacterial and viral pathogens. Fans and vents in treatment rooms redirect air outside to prevent cross-contamination; though, in keeping with the spa environment, they are hidden behind wood-slatted ceilings.

When asked what she enjoys most about her job, Dr. Kaplan said that she appreciates “interacting and building personal connections with clients and understanding and treating their aesthetic goals.” That sense of connection expands to her staff. “Every member of the Rejuve team is equally valued. We are dedicated to helping one another thrive, learn, and grow.”

Choosing to locate Rejuve Medspa in Newcastle was not a coincidence for Dr. Kaplan. From 2006 to 2013, she and her family lived in the China Falls neighborhood and “we fell in love with the Newcastle community.” Her aspiration to become “known as Newcastle’s premiere destination for healthy skin and body.”

Outside of her career, Dr. Kaplan enjoys architecture and design, drawing, painting, and gardening. Her favorite activity is spending time with her family – her husband Andy and her daughter Zoe and son Anders. Between hip hop dance, Tae Kwon Do and more, the kids keep their parents busy. Together, they enjoy family gatherings and traveling.

Can Relaxing Your Frown Lines Elevate Your Mood?

Feeling upset, worried, depressed, or experiencing pain causes the forehead muscles between the eyebrows and above your nose to contract. This area is known as the “Glabella”. So can relaxing the glabella muscles improve your mood? A growing body of research supports this theory.

Botox and Dysport are two popular Neuromodulators which relax muscles to prevent frown lines from forming. As a result, the feedback loop which tells your brain that you are angry, sad, anxious or worried are partially inhibited. Research supports the evidence that relaxing the muscles which are triggered by your negative emotions can help elevate your mood:

Research article: "Emotional proprioception: Treatment of depression with afferent facial feedback"

Research article: "The Use of Botulinum Toxin for Treatment of Depression"

Research article: Shrink that frown! Botulinum toxin therapy is lifting the face of psychiatry"

Research article: Depression--An emerging indication for botulinum toxin treatment"

Research article: "Botulinum toxin for the treatment of major depressive disorder"

It’s no wonder why treating frown lines with Botox or Dysport is one of the most popular aesthetic treatments today. Not only can it cause a positive change in your mood and affect, it can also prevent permanent wrinkles or deep folds from forming.

What’s the difference between Botox and Dysport?

Both Botox and Dysport contain Botulinum toxin Type A (BoNT-A). Botox is manufactured by Allergan, while Dysport is manufactured by Galderma. All BoNT-A products have the same size and weight of active neurotoxin. However, Botox and Dysport have different accessory protein complex components. Dysport is known to have a faster onset of action. 30% of patients have some response to Dysport within 24 hours, 73.3% have response within 48 hours, and 86.7% have response within 72 hours. However, the full effect of either Dysport or Botox will be apparent after 2 full weeks.

For most people, Botox and Dysport lasts for about 3 months. For many patients, Dysport also has a longer duration of action compared with Botox, sometimes up to 4-5 months. Results will vary depending on your individual muscle size, strength, and activity, among other factors.

how much botox or dysport will i need?

Every person responds differently to Botox and Dysport depending on the size, activity and strength of their muscles, and their metabolism. Each treatment cycle may vary based on metabolic rates, stress and activity levels. Physically active individuals tend to have shorter duration due to higher metabolic rates. Your Provider at Rejuve Medspa will customize your treatment based on your aesthetic goals.

EMSCULPT - BUILD MUSCLE AND BURN FAT

EMSCULPT has taken body sculpting to the next level. Not only does it build muscle, it also eliminates fat at the same time. Using High Intensity Focused Electromagnetic Energy (HIFEM) to contract muscles about 20,000 times during a 30 minute session, EMSCULPT has been clinically shown to reduce fat on average of about 19%, while increasing the thickness of muscle by 16% after 4 sessions.

Emsculpt NEO Has enhanced results compared to Emsculpt Classic.

what are the health benefits of emsculpt?

  • Improved core strength

  • Improved posture

  • Improved low back pain

  • Can be used for rehabilitation after injury or surgery

  • Improved diastasis (abdominal wall muscle separation) which commonly happens after pregnancy.

what areas can be treated with emsculpt?

  • Abdomen

  • Arm (Biceps and Triceps)

  • Thighs (Hamstrings and Quadriceps)

  • Legs (Calves)

  • Buttocks

what is emsculpt treatment like?

EMSCULPT feels like intense muscle contractions. Your provider can titrate the intensity of the muscle contractions based on individual needs and comfort levels. The HIFEM contractions are equivalent to doing 20,000 sit-ups in 30 minutes. You might have mild muscle soreness after EMSCULPT, but most people do not. This is because EMSCULPT alternates between intense contractions and tapping which helps to release lactic acid build up in the muscles caused by the intense contractions.

EMSCULPT is non-invasive, safe, and comfortable. For optimal results, a series of 4 treatments – 2 treatments per week is recommended. We also recommend that you drink 2 liters of water the day before and 1.5 liters of water on the day of treatment to help improve the elimination of dead fat cells through your lymphatic system. Wear loose clothing and avoid clothing with zippers or metal.

Is EMSCULPT right for me?

It is best to schedule a consultation with our doctor or nurse practitioner to determine if you are the right candidate for treatment. EMSCULPT should be avoided if you have metal implants in your spine, pacemaker/defibrillator, implanted medication pumps, copper IUD, or pregnancy.

Is there any downtime with emsculpt?

There is no downtime with EMSCULPT. You can get back to your normal activities right away.

When can I expect to see results with emsculpt?

Clinical studies have shown that results can be seen within a month and can continue to improve for up to 3-6 months. Results remain stable for about a year without change in diet or exercise. It is recommended that you maintain a well-balanced healthy diet and routine exercise regimen.

What is keralase and Why Is It Better Than Platelets For Hair Loss?

Keralase is a revolutionary new treatment for hair loss using Lutronic Ultra laser and KeraFactor. KeraFactor serum has proprietary biometric synthetic versions of growth factors and proteins which promote hair growth. Ultra alone showed significant improvements in scalp revitalization.

Kerafactor is coated with nano-liposomes which aid its absorption, allowing for enhanced delivery of growth hormones directly to the hair follicles. Each nano-liposome contains thousands of each specific growth factor.

How is Keralase treatment performed?

Lutronic Ultra laser creates tiny “microchannels” in the scalp which help to increase the absorption of KeraFactor. KeraFactor is then applied and massaged into the scalp. There is minimal pain, no bleeding, and no downtime. No needles or shots are required.

Why is KeraFactor better than Platelets?

KeraFactor has highly concentrated levels of growth hormones and proteins that specifically boost hair growth and affects all 4 stages of the hair life cycle. Kerafactor is coated with nano-liposomes which aid its absorption, allowing for enhanced delivery of growth hormones directly to the hair follicles. Each nano-liposome contains thousands of each specific growth factor.

Platelets have variable amounts of growth factors depending on the genetics and health conditions of the person. Platelets also contain growth factors that actually inhibit hair growth. Kerafactor does not require a blood draw, nor does it require multiple injections into the scalp. Even after numbing medication, the injections can be painful and lead to bruising or hematomas.

What are the results of Keralase?

  • Revitalized hair & increased thickness

  • Results can vary from person to person, but clinical studies have shown about 38% increase in hair growth

  • 64% - 113% increase in hair diameter

What should I do to prepare for the Keralase Treatment?

  • Wash hair the night before the treatment. Hair must be clean and free of hair products.

  • Remain out of the sun or use sun protection (SPF or hat) for a week before and after each treatment.

  • After the treatment you may notice hairs in the telogen phase (resting phase) may be shed by any slight trauma due to laser or microneedling.

  • Once the hair and scalp dry naturally patient can resume normal activities including washing drying and/or hair products.

What are the Stages of Hair Growth?

The scalp has about 100,000 hair follicles. It can be normal to lose about 100 hairs daily. The growth phase, or anagen phase, lasts an average of 3-5 years. Once the cycle is complete, it restarts and a new strand of hair grows.

What are common reversable causes of hair loss?

For Keralase to be successful, you should be the right candidate. So making sure that you don’t have these following untreated conditions is important.

  • Anemia

  • Thyroid disorders

  • Elevated Testosterone levels

  • Decreased Estrogen levels (post-menopause)

  • Cushing’s Syndrome

  • Vit B12 and Iron deficiency

  • Heavy metal toxicity (mercury, arsenic)

  • Medications (Zoloft, Prozac, etc)

Who can benefit from Keralase?

  • People with androgenic hair loss (male pattern baldness) can benefit from early prevention and treatment of hair loss.

  • Female pattern baldness (post-menopausal)

What conditions do not respond well to treatment with Keralase?

  • Scarring alopecia

  • Non-scarring alopecia

  • Alopecia Areata (patchy and/or generalized balding, thinning hair with abrupt bare patches)

What other treatments should I consider in addition to Keralase?

  • Minoxidil

    • Minoxidil improves the blood flow to the scalp, thereby improving the nutrient supply to the hair follicles.

  • Finasteride (for men)

    • Finasteride works by decreasing the amount of a natural body hormone (DHT). Decreasing the amount of DHT leads to increased hair regrowth and slower hair loss. Hair growth on other parts of the body is not affected by finasteride.

  • Progesterone (for women)

    • After menopause, women have lower levels of Progesterone. Supplementation of progesterone can help keep your hair in the growing (anagen) phase. This hormone can help your hair stay on your head longer and may even help your hair grow faster.

  • KeraFactor Shampoo and Conditioner

    • Stimulates the scalp for better absorption of Kerafactor Scalp Stimulating Solution.

  • KeraFactor Scalp Stimulating Solution

    • Renews and revitalizes the scalp using proprietary KeraFactor Peptide Complex.

  • LaserCap - LLLT (Low Level Light Therapy)

    • Red and Infrared light has been clinically shown to boost the ATP (energy) levels in the cells and promotes hair growth.

  • Nutrafol

    • Contains natural ingredients clinically shown to improve hair growth, thickness and less shedding.

Combination therapy:

Combining various modalities of treatment will increase your chance of success. Prevention and early treatment is key.
